Introduction
The Udaloy class is a destroyer of Soviet origin. It was developed in the mid 1970s for the anti-submarine role and was to serve alongside the Sovremenny class that serves in the anti-shipping and air defence role. Udaloy is the widely used NATO reporting name while the official designation is Project 1155 and its nickname is Fregat, Russian for frigate bird. The Udaloy class replaced the older Kresta II class.
Layout
The hull design is inspired by the Krivak class destroyer and a similar propulsion system is used. The layout is conventional for Russian standards with the guns on the forward deck, large missile launchers next to the bridge, funnels and sensors among the superstructure and the hanger and helicopter deck at the rear.
Firepower
The main weapon system of the Udaloy class are the SS-N-14 Silex anti-submarine missiles that are launched from the large quad launchers under the bridge. At the rear two quadruple 533mm torpedo launchers are fitted. Surface targets can be engaged using the two single 100mm guns. Short range air defense consists of 8 octuple vertical launchers for the SA-N-9 surface to air missile. Self defense consists of four 30mm AK-630 CIWS systems. The two Ka-27 helicoptes can also be used in the anti-submarine role. Sea mines can also be carried. The Udaloy II features an improved anti-shipping capability while it is fitted with the SS-N-22 anti-ship missiles.
Electronics
The sensons consist of a hull mounted active sonar, air and surface search radars and various fire control and IFF systems. Datalinks allow the Udaloy to exchange data with other vessels. Countermeasures consist of various chaff launchers and ESM and ECM systems.
Mobility
The Udaloy class features a combined gas and gas propulsion system. The system consists of two large gas turbines and two minor gas turbines that power two shafts. A maximum speed of 28 to 30 knots can be achieved. The maximum range is 7.700 nm at 18 knots.
Users
A total of 15 ships were to be commissioned by the Soviet navy. Due to the break up of the USSR only 13 were built. All Udaloys were transfered to the Russian navy. Four have been retired and 9 are in service.
Project 1155 Fregat
The standard version is the most common in the Udaloy class as all but one vessel belong to the standard version. The standard Udaloy features very capable anti-submarine armament, but little weapons against air and surface targets. The standard version can recognized by the two single 100mm gun turrets, the large strut alongside the SS-N-14 launcher and the SS-N-14 quad launcher is a single block instead of four tubes stacked together.

Project 1155.1 Fregat II
The Udaloy II class is a major improvement over the original Udaloy class. The last 3 of the 15 Udaloys were to be of Udaloy II standard, but as the last two were never built only a single Udaloy II has been commissioned. The Udaloy II features some different weapon systems and is the only multipurpose destroyer in Soviet service. The SS-N-14 Silex launchers have been replaced by SS-N-22 Sunburn launchers and provide a serious anti-shipping capability. The two single 100mm guns have been replaced by a single twin 130mm gun. The SS-N-15 anti-submarine missiles that are launched from the 533mm torpedo tubes make up for the loss of the SS-N-14 missiles.
