Introduction
The 5.7x28mm round is a pistol cartridge of Belgian origin. It was developed by Fabrique Nationale in the 1980's for use in the P90 sub machine gun. The 5.7x28mm round was the first small caliber high velocity pistol cartridge. The most direct competitor is the 4.6x30mm round developed by Heckler & Koch for the MP7 machine pistol.
Design
The 5.7x28mm is based upon the 5.56x45mm SS109 NATO round, which was also developed by Fabrique Nationale. The case and bullet are reduced in size to create a performance in the 9x19mm range with much improved armor piercing capability. Unlike most pistol cartridges the 5.7x28mm has a long and slim design with bottlenecked case and pointed bullet design. The 5.7mm has only a third of the recoil of the 5.56mm NATO and two-thirds of the 9x19mm. The 5.7x28mm allows for a higher magazine capacity than other alternatives for the 9mm, such as the .40 S&W and .357 SIG rounds.
Weapon systems
The 5.7x28mm round was designed for the P90 sub machine gun. The P90 has a unique design since it uses a 50 round translucent magazine that lies on top of the weapon. The Fiveseven pistol with conventional 20 round magazine also uses the 5.7x28mm round.
Performance
The 5.7x28mm round provides nearly the same lethality as the 9x19mm round. It is very good at piercing armor since it is able to pierce 1.6mm titanium plus 20 layers of kevlar out to 150 meters, which corresponds to most combat body armor and helmets. The maximum effective range is 200 meters for both the FMJ and JHP rounds. The SB193 has a much reduced range of 50 to 100 meters and the V-max bullets can be used out to 150 meters.
Users
The 5.7x28mm round is mainly used by law enforcement units around the world, but mainly in Europe and the USA. The P90 is also in use with special units in the military. In some nations 5.7mm weapons are available to the public with not all types of ammunition being freely available.
5.7x28mm: The first generation
The first generation of 5.7x28mm ammunition was developed for military use. The SS190 remains the main round fired from 5.7mm weapons and is the most produced of all 5.7mm ammunition.
SS90: The SS90 armor piercing round was developed in the late 1980's. The SS90 was mainly used during development of the P90 and was hardly used in actual service. It was replaced by the more potent SS190 round and production ceased in 1994.
SS190: The SS190 is an armor piercing FMJ round of which all subsequent rounds are derived. It was introduced in 1993. Compared to the SS90 it has a shorter and heavier bullet.
L191: The L191 is a tracer version of the SS190 and was called the SS191 for a short time.
SS192: The SS192 is a JHP version of the SS190. It was introduced in 2004 and discontinued the next year.
SB193: The SB193 FMJ BT subsonic round derived from the SS190. It has a much lower velocity and range.
T194: The T194 is a JHP round developed for training. It was discontinued in 2002.

5.7x28mm: The second generation
The second generation of 5.7x28mm ammunition was developed for the US law enforcement and civilian market. The LF rounds may be used for training and law enforcement use and the sporting rounds are for civilian use since armor piercing ammunition is prohibited in the USA.
SS195LF: The SS195LF is a lead free JHP round based on the SS192. The acronym LF stands for Lead Free.
SS196SR: The SS196SR is a V-max sporting round introduced in 2005. It was quickly replaced by SS197SR. The acronym SR stands for Sporting Round.
SS197SR: The SS197SR uses the same bullet as the SS196SR but features a higher muzzle velocity.
SS198LF: The SS198LF is similar to the SS195LF but features a similar increase in velocity as the SS197SR.
