Introduction

The SIG Pro is a modern pistol of Swiss origin. The design is based on the successful P220 series of pistols and is the first SIG pistol that uses polymer components. It was developed as a more modern alternative to the all metal P226.

Design

The SIG Pro functions similar to the earlier SIG P226 pistol. The main difference is the use of a polymer frame. The grip panels can be removed and replaced with different sizes to fit the user. The SIG Pro uses the short recoil mechanism and operates from a locked breech.

Firepower

The SIG Pro is a semi-automatic pistol that fires the 9x19mm round from a 15 round dual stack magazine or the .357 SIG or .40 S&W round from a 12 round dual stack magazine. The maximum effective range is a few dozen meters.

Users

The SIG Pro has been chosen as the service pistol for all French law enforcement forces and over 250.000 have been ordered. Given the success of SIG on the US law enforcement and civilian markets the USA will also be one of the main markets for the SIG Pro.

Variants

First generation

The first SIG Pro model was the SP2340 full size pistol which is chambered in either .357 SIG or .40 S&W. Later the similar sized SP 2009 chambered in 9x19mm was added. The SPC 2009 is a compact version of the SP 2009. It has a shorter slide and frame and is only available in 9x19mm. All first generation SIG Pro pistols are fitted with the proprietary SIG accessory rails.

Second generation

The SP 2022 is the second generation of SIG Pro pistols. They have been developed to meet the requirements of the French police for a service pistol which is to remain in use until the year 2022, hence the name. The second generation differs from the first in the shape of the trigger guard and sights, fitting of Picatinny accessory rail and in having a threaded barrel to accept silencers. The SPC 2022 is a compact version of the SP 2022. It has a flat bottom magazine, shorter slide and frame and is only available in 9x19mm.
