Introduction
The AK-63 family of assault rifles are Hungarian variants of the Soviet AKM assault rifle. The earlier AKM-63 and AMD-65 are among the few versions of the AK-47 that do not use a wooden furniture. The later AK-63 models are more traditional.
Design
Technically the AK-63 is completely similar to the AKM. Only the furniture is very different on the earlier Hungarian variants since metal handguards with plastic forward and pistol grips were used. Of special notice is the AMD-65
one of the few carbine variants of the AK-47 series. It is fitted with a large muzzle brake to compensate for the shorter barrel.
Firepower
The AK-63 fires the Soviet 7.62x39mm round from 20, 30 or 40 round magazines. The 40 round magazines do not work on the earlier versions as the vertical grip on the handguard interferes with the longer magazines. Being a select fire weapon the AK-63 is able to fire semi-automatically or fully automatic at a cyclic 600 rounds per minute.
Users
All variants of the AK-63 were adopted by the Hungarian forces. The AK-63 has also been exported to numerous allied states and irregular forces.
AMD-65
The AMD-65 is a carbine version of the AKM-63. AMD stands for Automata Módosított Deszant, Hungarian for modified paratrooper assault weapon. It has a shorter barrel with special muzzle brake and folding metal wire stock. The AMD-65 retains the signature metal handguard and plastic vertical and pistol grips.

AK-63
The AK-63 is a more traditional copy of the Soviet AKM and is therefore less costly to produce than the AKM-63. The straighter pistol grip sets the AK-63 apart from the Soviet AKM. The AK-63F has a wooden fixed stock and the AK-63D an AKMS-type foldable metal stock.
