Introduction

The PM md. 86 is a late Cold War era assault rifle of Romanian origin. It is the Romanian equivalent to the Soviet AK-74. The design is based on the PM md. 63, which is the Romanian production model of the well known Soviet AKM.

Design

In essence the PM md. 86 is nothing more than a PM md. 63 chambered in 5.45x39mm that is fitted with a metal wire folding stock and a flash hider. The PM md. 86 retains the AK-47 style 45 degree gas block design and only comes with wooden furniture. A light machine gun variant and carbine variant have been developed as well.

Firepower

The PM md. 86 fires the 5.45x39mm round from a 30 round magazine. The cyclic rate of fire is about 600 rpm and a three round burst option has been added. The maximum effective range is about 400 meters for the rifle variant and 600 meters for the light machine gun.

Users

The PM md. 86 assault rifle and PM md. 89 light machine gun are used by Romania. They are available for export in 5.45x39mm Soviet and 5.56x45mm NATO. Foreign use is limited as the original 7.62x39mm round remains more common in most parts of the world.

Variants

PM md. 86

PM md. 86: A PM md. 63 chambered for 5.45x49mm round. It can be easily distingduised from the Soviet AK-74 by its different gas block angle, forward grip and wire framestock.
