Introduction

The 40AGL is an automatic grenade launcher of Singapore origin. It was not only developed for Singaporese use, export was one of the design motives. The name 40AGL stands for 40mm Automatic Grenade Launcher. The 40AGL has similar dimensions and firepower as the US Mk 19 and German GMG.

Design

The 40AGL uses blowback operation with advanced primer ignition, a method used in the original US Mk 19 but omitted in later models. Belts are fed from left to right. Iron sights are optional and aiming is usually done by using an optical sight, an optical sight with laser range finder or night vision sight.

Firepower

The 40AGL fires 40x53mm high velocity grenades from disintegrating metal link belts. The 40AGL is a select fire weapon with a cyclic rate of fire of 350 rpm. The maximum range is 2.2 km, although the effective range is 1.5 km. The standard HEDP grenades have a lethal radius of 5 m, wounding radius of 15 m and will pierce the armor of most armored vehicles.

Users

The 40AGL was first used by the Singapore armed forces in 1991. Additionally it has been widely exported. Since 1994 it is produced under license in Indonesia for several years.

Variants

40AGL

The 40AGL is an automatic grenade launcher that fires 40x53mm high velocity rounds. It comes in only one version but differs in what sights are fitted. The 40AGL may be fitted with two types of iron sights and various types of optical sight units. The 40AGL can be distinct from other automatic grenade launchers by the triangular receiver.
