Introduction
The EE-3 is a reconnaissance vehicle of Brazilian origin. It was developed as a lighter alternative to the large EE-9 Cascavel. The name Jararaca comes from a type of pit viper.
Layout
The EE-3 is based on a 4x4 chassis. The crew compartment is at the front and the engine compartment is at the rear. There is room for a crew of three.
Firepower
The EE-3 is fitted with a small one man turret with pintle mounted 7.62mm MAG or 12.7mm M2HB heavy machine gun. In Cypriot service a Milan anti-tank missile launcher is fitted alongside the machine gun.
Protection
The armor protects the crew from small arms fire and shell splinters. Since the armament is pintle mounted without gun shield the gunner is fully exposed. There are no smoke grenade launchers and NBC system is optional.
Mobility
The 4x4 wheelbase provides good mobility on the road and in the field. A 120 hp Mercedes-Benz diesel engine provides propulsion, allowing for a maximum speed of 100 km/h on roads.
Users
Unlike the EE-9 the EE-3 was not an export success and few vehicles were produced. The EE-3 is used in small numbers by several nations.
EE-3 Jararaca
The EE-3 is produced only in a single version. The production models differ in minor details. Cypriot models add a Milan anti-tank missile launcher. Uruguayan models feature a gun shield.
