Introduction
The M-ATV is an armored personnel carrier of US origin. In the US MRAP All Terrain Vehicle (M-ATV) program five contenders took part and the Oshkosh vehicle was selected in 2009. The M-ATV program was to result in a vehicle that would be as well protected as previous MRAP vehicles but with a lower weight and much better mobility. The M-ATV is to replace most HMMWV weapon carriers in patrol and specialist roles.
Layout
The M-ATV is based on the proven MTVR 4x4 truck chassis and features the same independent suspension. The Catarpillar engine is mounted at the front, the protected crew cabin is in the middle and the unprotected cargo area is at the rear. The M-ATV can be adopted to various roles by installing different mission specific equipment on the 2 t payload area at the rear. The crew cabin features a V-shaped hull and armament on the roof.
Firepower
A variety of armament can be installed on the roof and includes the 7.62mm MAG machine gun, the 12.7mm M2HB heavy machine gun, the 40mm Mk 19 grenade launcher and the TOW anti-tank guided weapon. Currently the armament is installed on a ring mount with gun shield and all round protection with vision blocks. A remotely operated weapon system
Protection
The M-ATV is very well protected against IED attacks with its V-shaped hull. The steel armor and bullet proof glass protect the crew from small arms fire and shell splinters.
Mobility
The 4x4 chassis with independent suspension and the Caterpillar 370 hp diesel engine provide a very good mobility both on and off road. The maximum road speed is 105 km/h and the range is over 500 km. The M-ATV is also able to travel at high speeds on dirt roads. The run flat tires allow the vehicle to travel at 50 km/h up to a range of 50 km. With its low center of gravity the M-ATV is much less prone to tipping over than previous generations of MRAP's
Users
The M-ATV has been ordered in large quantities by the US armed forces and is actively used in Afghanistan and Iraq.
M-ATV
The M-ATV is a mine resistant armored personnel carrier. It is mainly used as a general purpose vehicle in a similar way as the HMMWV has been used for many years. There are no variants but the rear platform behind the armored cabin can be used for various mission specific modules or general storage.
