Introduction
The KaMAZ Mustang series of modern tactical trucks of Russian origin. This series was developed from the earlier lineup of KaMAZ military trucks. The Mustang series is more rugged and militarized than the previous KaMAZ lineup, which remains in production besides the Mustang.
Layout
Knowledge and experience from the KaMAZ-4310 family has been incorporated into the newer Mustang series. The Mustang series comes in a 4x4, 6x6 and 8x8 variant, called the KaMAZ-4350, -5350 and -6350 respectively. All versions feature the same forward control cab and basic chassis design. A wide variety of body types can be installed. Normally a flatbed with drop sides and tarpaulin cover is fitted. The Mustang series features an unarmored driver's cab.An add on armor kit is optional. Low visibility internal armor is being researched. No NBC system or smoke equipment are present. The Mustang series is unarmed.
Cargo capacity
The chassis allows for a wide variety of body types and includes cargo, shelter, tanker and various weapon systems. The Mustang series has been utilized for various weapon platforms, including the Pantsir-S1 air defense vehicle and various multiple rocket launchers. Depending on the version the standard truck models allow for 7 to 12 t of cargo or 30 to 40 troops.
Mobility
Both on road and off road performance of the Mustang series is very good. All members of the series feature all wheel drive and wide range gear boxes. Variable tire pressure ensures high mobility on all kinds of surface. Propulsion is provided a 240 hp, 260 hp or 360 hp V8 diesel engine for the 4x4, 6x6 and 8x8 versions respectively. Proper operation is ensured between -50 to +45 degrees Celsius.
Users
The Mustang series was officially accepted by the Russian military in 2002, with production starting next year. The whole series is available for export and many weapon systems utilize a Mustang as a chassis.
