Introduction
The 2S23 Nona is a self-propelled mortar of Russian origin. It was developed in the late 1980s as a more mobile and less costly alternative to the 2S9 Anona. It is to support troops with both direct and indirect fire.
Layout
The 2S23 is based on the widely used BTR-80 chassis. It features a modified 2S9 Anona turret with a breech loaded gun/mortar of comparable design. The chassis differs from the BTR-80 in having no firing ports and the side doors have been removed.
Firepower
The 2S23 is able to provide both direct and indirect fire with its breech loaded smoothbore 120mm 2A60 gun/mortar. The maximum range is 9 km with standard rounds and 12.8 km with rocket assisted rounds. Armored vehicles can be engaged using a dedicated anti-tank HEAT round out to 1 km. Only 30 120mm rounds are carried. A 7.62mm PK machine gun is mounted on the turret roof for self-defense.
Protection
The steel armor protects the crew from small arms fire and shell splinters all around and from 12.7mm rounds over the frontal arc. An NBC system is standard and six smoke grenade launchers are fitted to the turret.
Mobility
The 8x8 chassis provides good mobility on roads and off road. Compared to the 2S9 Anona the 2S23 is faster and more fuel efficient, but is less capable in the field. Even though the large turret makes the 2S23 less stable it retains the amphibious capability.
Users
The 2S23 is only used by Russian forces with several dozen in service. It is used by the army, naval infantry and airborne troops.
2S23 Nona
The 2S23 Nona is produced only in one version. It is easily identified by its BTR-80 chassis in combination with large turret with 120mm gun/mortar.
