Introduction
The 2S19 is a late Cold War era tracked 152mm self-propelled howitzer of Soviet origin. Development started in the 1980's and it was accepted for service in 1989. The 2S19 was developed to replace the older 2S3 and 2S5 self-propelled howitzers. The 2S19 is nicknamed Msta, which is a river in Russia.
Layout
The 2S19 is based on the T-80 chassis that is fitted with a T-72 drive train. The crew of five consists of a commander, driver, gunner and two loaders. The driver is seated at the front, the turret in the middle and the drive train in the rear of hull. The turret houses the rest of the crew and automated loading system.
Firepower
The 2S19 is armed with a 152mm 2A64 howitzer connected to an autoloader. The maximum range is 24.7km with standard ammunition, 29km with base bleed rounds and 36 km with rocket assisted rounds. The autoloader provides a maximum rate of fire of 7 to 8 rounds per minute. An external loading tray is fitted at the rear of the turret allowing external rounds to be used at a rate of up to 6 rounds per minute. A total of 50 152mm rounds are carried in the vehicle. A 12.7mm NSVT heavy machine gun is mounted on the turret roof for self-defense.
Protection
The 2S19 is operated from under full armor protection. The steel armor provides a good level of protection. An NBC and fire extinguishing system are standard and 6 smoke grenade dischargers are fitted to the turret.
Mobility
The T-80 chassis provides the 2S19 with a very good cross country mobility. A 780hp or 840hp diesel engine provides propulsion and an auxiliary power unit provides power when the engine is not running.
Users
Russia is the main user of the 2S19, but limited quantities have been exported to various nations. It is expected that production and sales will continue. Thus far well over 500 units have been produced.
2S19 Msta
The 2S19 is a tracked 152mm self-propelled howitzer that is based on a T-80 chassis. It is armed with a 152mm 2A64 cannon that is connected to an automatic loader. Models with a 155mm ordnance are proposed for export.
